Hawks win Mayor's Cup meet

With five of the top 21 finishers in the cross country 2.5-mile run, Townsend Harris won the girls side of the Mayor's Cup team competition, the citywide meet featuring private, public and Catholic schools.
A talented track & field long distance runner, senior Devotia Moore, a second place finisher a year ago, was fourth, Lorna Russi was ninth, Kathryn Sullivan 19th, Amina Smith 20th and Susan Wasserman 21st.
&#8220I knew we'd be in the race,” said Townsend Harris coach Tim Connor on the PSAL website. &#8220They ran really well.”
Winning a city championship is hopefully the next step. The Hawks have won the freshman and sophomore city titles in past years, but never a varsity championship - they were second last fall. &#8220We have a lot of senior leadership,” added Connor. &#8220They know what they have to do.”
Elsewhere at the Mayor's Cup, Carlos David Roa of St. Francis Prep set a meet record in the 1.5 mile freshman race running in 8:53.33, and fellow Terrier Karen Roa finished second overall to Julia McMahon in the 2.5-mile varsity girls run.
