With five of the top 21 finishers in the cross country 2.5-mile run, Townsend Harris won the girls side of the Mayor's Cup team competition, the citywide meet featuring private, public and Catholic schools.
A talented track & field long distance runner, senior Devotia Moore, a second place finisher a year ago, was fourth, Lorna Russi was ninth, Kathryn Sullivan 19th, Amina Smith 20th and Susan Wasserman 21st.
“I knew we'd be in the race,” said Townsend Harris coach Tim Connor on the PSAL website. “They ran really well.”
Winning a city championship is hopefully the next step. The Hawks have won the freshman and sophomore city titles in past years, but never a varsity championship - they were second last fall. “We have a lot of senior leadership,” added Connor. “They know what they have to do.”
Elsewhere at the Mayor's Cup, Carlos David Roa of St. Francis Prep set a meet record in the 1.5 mile freshman race running in 8:53.33, and fellow Terrier Karen Roa finished second overall to Julia McMahon in the 2.5-mile varsity girls run.
