When Long Island City Coach Stephen Agresti first met his new wide receiver Troy Walker over the summer, he was impressed by his size, speed and strength. But what really made the fourth-year coach smile was when the 6-foot, 170-pound flanker, who came from Deer Park, LI, told him he was just 15 years old. “I have to keep reminding myself I have this kid for another two years,” Agresti said. “He's fast, he runs good routes, and he's got good hands.”
Those skills were all on display as Walker caught six passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns, sparking the Bulldogs to their fourth straight win, a 42-12 throttling of Truman. Quarterback Haris Lekaj threw for career-highs of 363 yards and four touchdowns, and Omar Mohran ran for 113 yards and a score.
But now LIC (4-0, Cup Division) will face their sternest test to date when they travel to Staten Island to face undefeated McKee/Staten Island Tech, who knocked them off last year, 12-6, in a first-place showdown. “This is going to be a challenge for us,” Agresti said, “but I think we're up to it.”
Jamaica (1-3, Bowl Division) got their first win, routing John Adams (0-4, Bowl Division) 34-6. Nyles Bynum returned a pair of punts for scores and also ran for 63 yards and a touchdown. The Spartans have now lost 13 of their last 14 dating back to 2004. Campus Magnet (3-1, Bowl Division) got back on the winning track, topping Beach Channel, 6-3, on Datalia Holness's 17-yard scoring strike to Stephan Benjamin in overtime. Davin Baker led the Bulldogs' fearsome pass rush with two of their five sacks.
Elsewhere, Bayside and August Martin remained winless. The Commodores (0-4, City Championship Division) fell to Lehman, 30-6, while the Falcons (0-4, Bowl Division) were blanked by Erasmus Hall, 21-0.
William Bryant (3-1, Cup Division) topped Adlai Stephenson, 39-12, behind Darro Clarke's 182 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Springfield Gardens won their second straight, a 24-0 shutout of Automotive. Raymond Potter tossed a touchdown pass to Marcus Sharp and ran for a score, and the Golden Eagles recovered four fumbles to even their record to 2-2 in Cup Division play.
