Four Queens teams have reached the quarterfinals of the PSAL Class A volleyball playoffs. Two of them - No. 13 Grover Cleveland and No. 14 Newtown - weren't expected to make it that far. Grover Cleveland shocked fourth-seeded Midwood, 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, and Newtown topped Cardozo, the Division 17 winners, in three sets.
The other two borough representatives remaining are less of a surprise. No. 9 Flushing topped eighth-seeded Curtis of Staten Island, 25-12, 25-22, behind nine kills and nine assists from Yenifer Santana and 16 service points and four aces by Elizabeth Santana. The Red Devils will next meet top-ranked Hunter, the defending city champions.
Fifth-seeded Francis Lewis is well on its way to reaching at least the semifinals for the fourth time in as many years after sweeping No. 21 Columbus, 25-10, 25-14. Cherees Sheen had 12 service points, Jennifer Smith had 11 and Jen Dortch added six assists, two digs and two blocks for the Patriots, who meet Cleveland.
