Road rage turns deadly

A minor traffic dispute turned fatal near LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday evening, January 9, when an off-duty New York State correction officer shot and killed one of two brothers who allegedly assaulted him, police said.
According to published reports, the road rage incident occurred at the intersection of the Grand Central Parkway and 94th Street in East Elmhurst when Emilio Maldonado, 29, honked his horn at the SUV in front of him.
Two brothers, identified by police as Chris Kenner, 36, of 105-15 31st Avenue in East Elmhurst and Leroy Kenner, 45, of 89-84 Hollis Court Boulevard in Queens Village, approached Maldonado's car and began a dispute.
Maldonado's wife and 1-year-old son were reportedly in the car at the time.
Maldonado, who has been employed as a correction officer at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County since October 2004, according to New York State Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) spokesperson Linda Foglia, shot Chris Kenner once in the chest with the registered handgun he was authorized to carry.
Leroy Kenner fled the scene but was later arrested and charged with assault. Chris Kenner was pronounced dead on arrival at Elmhurst Hospital, police said.
A police investigation is ongoing and no charges had been filed against Maldonado as of press time, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
Foglia said that DOCS has taken no administrative action against Maldonado.
