A senior who knows the value of time

Sunnyside resident Anayeli Herreros, a senior at the Business, Computer Applications and Entrepreneurship High School in Cambria Heights, takes part in many different activities that help her directly give back to the school and also help members of the community.
Herreros began at the school as a freshman. She selected it based on its programs and her interest in business and accounting. She is now a very active member of the school, belonging to several different organizations.
“I just like trying to make a difference at school by putting in some of my time,” she said.
This year, Herreros is serving as the President of the Senior Council. Her main duties involve organizing fundraisers that assist in paying for senior activities such as a barbeque and trip.
“I think I have the potential to bring everything together for the senior class and make it a wonderful year for the seniors,” Herreros said of her decision to take on the responsibility.
Herreros’ other activities include being a member of the honor society Arista and the yearbook committee. As a member of the yearbook committee, she assists with putting together its pages.
Also, Herreros is a member of the service organization DECA and the school’s chapter of Business Professionals of America (BPA). Through DECA, some of the activities that Herreros has participated in are Halloween Fest in Central Park where students handed out pumpkins to children and painted faces and a fundraiser for the Special Olympics.
As a member of BPA, Herreros has taken part in leadership programs and, as a junior last year, attended a conference in Florida, which she said so far has been one of her favorite high school memories. In May, Herreros will participate in a competition in Manhattan through BPA. She explained that people from different parts of the world will attend the event and participate in the competition.
Herreros said that the most rewarding parts of her school involvement have been meeting other students and learning leadership skills, which she said have given her more confidence in herself. She said that, in the future, she feels such skills will benefit her with job interviews and eventually with her career.
Herreros said that the two biggest inspirations in her life have been her parents - Amada Herreros and Julia Yanez.
“Both have…set a good example for me and given me advice,” said Herreros, who has two eight-year-old brothers and a 13-year-old sister.
Following graduating from the Business, Computer Applications & Entrepreneurship High School, which is part of the Magnet High School, Herreros will go on to college where she will work towards getting a masters degree in accounting and eventually becoming a certified public accountant.
Herreros said that, since she was in the eighth grade, she wanted to do something in business. She also said that being at the school helped her find her interest in accounting, a field she likes because of its use of numbers.
