Although school still has two months to go until summer recess, students and their families should be thinking about summer jobs now.
The city’s Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) has released applications for the 2007 New York City Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP.) The program typically provides entry-level work experience for city youths between the ages of 14 to 21, in community-based organizations and city agencies.
Applicants can work up to 25 hours-per-week while earning $7.15 per hour. This is the first year that applications can be made online. Copies of the application can be downloaded at the DYCD website: www.nyc.gov/dycd
The deadline to submit a completed application is May 18, 2007.
SYEP is also designed to teach real-world labor expectations, financial literacy and a greater awareness of the various support networks and programs available at community-based organizations. Over the years, between 25,000 and 50,000 city youths annually have participated in the programs.
