Flushing woman wins $35K

Flushing resident Jennifer Simons and husband, David (left) are all smiles after she hit the jackpot at Empire City, the newly-opened casino that is part of Yonkers Raceway. On July 1, Simmons bet 50 cents on the nickel slot machine and it paid off $35,720.33
By state law, coin-operated gaming machines can only be operated at racetracks. Plans to house the machines at Aqueduct, the only racetrack entirely in New York City, fell through because of uncertainty about the track’s future.
Legislators are fighting to keep Aqueduct open, so the borough can get in on the action.
