A handful of the 150 firefighters who responded to a 5-alarm blaze in Corona prepare to enter the heavily damaged Duane Reade drug store at 37-30 Junction Boulevard, near 37th Avenue.
The fire, which broke out about 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7 rapidly spread to other stores and forced the evacuation of at least five residential buildings.
No civilians were injured, although a dozen firefighters had to be treated for what were called “minor injuries,” and eight of them were briefly hospitalized.
Service on the nearby 7-train was not affected by the blaze, which did force re-routing of the Q-72 bus.
The fire was declared under control shortly after 8 a.m.
