‘Green’ pet store to re-open in Atlas Park

Come September, Queens pet owners will have the chance to shop for a slew of animal accessories at an environmentally-conscious shop. Crazy for Animals, the city’s first ‘green’ pet store will re-open at The Shops at Atlas Park located at 8000 Cooper Avenue in Glendale.
“This is the first we have heard of a ‘green’ pet store in New York City,” says Lauren Hildebrand, program coordinator of the New York City chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. “It will hopefully become something we see more of in the future.”
The owners of Crazy for Animals, which opened originally in The Shops in 2006, opted to redesign the store to include many eco-friendly features in the shop’s design and materials. In addition, the store’s business cards and shopping bags are from recycled paper, and the store’s staff will wear shirts made from fiber that is derived from corn.
“We will have bamboo floors, hand-waxed cabinets, and energy efficient lighting, as well as a full line of holistic food and spa products for pets,” said the store’s co-owner Joan Stack.
With a sitting area and an in-store dog run, the store will be a fun spot for people and their pooches, the owners believe.
In addition, Crazy for Animals has teamed up with local pet-adoption group, Bobbi and The Strays.
“We work with owner and founder Bobbi Giordano in encouraging rescue,” said Stack, a volunteer for the Ozone Park animal shelter. “We offer a 30 percent discount on your entire first order if you adopt an animal.”
