Jamaica Avenue in Woodhaven transformed itself into a smorgasbord of food, fun and music Sunday, October 14 for the Woodhaven Business Improvement District’s (BID) 27th Annual Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival.
Closed to traffic between 80th Street and Woodhaven Boulevard, Jamaica Avenue featured vendors offering pony rides, Jets tickets, foot massages, and much more. One vendor sold toy cars, while another showed off a set of real ones.
“They’re not for sale,” said Mike Velez of the three Cadillac models lining Jamaica between 85th and 86th Streets. Velez joked with one woman that she could buy his 1959 Cadillac Corvette for $500. For a minute, she believed him.
“Yeah, $500 for one wheel,” he said.
Velez, a collector, said he had no interest in making money off the cars.
“We’re just here to have fun,” he said.
At 87th Street, DOT Baker, a local band formerly known as Portable Whitman, gathered a strong crowd with original rock music, as well as covers ranging from classic rock to modern alternative.
“It’s fun when there’s a crowd,” said bassist Steve McNally of playing in an open, outdoor atmosphere. “It gives you a little room to breathe.”
Maria Thomson, Director of the Woodhaven BID, said the day worked out perfectly.
“I loved the weather,” she said. “God was good to us.”
