Dozens of Queens residents and elected officials gathered recently to remember mountain climber Sir Edmund Hillary, who passed away on Friday, January 11 at the age of 88. Hillary is best known for being the first climber to reach the top of Mount Everest along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. The memorial event, held on Sunday, January 20 at the Queens Palace in Woodside, was organized by the United Sherpa Association, and during the service, Sherpa lamas blew on horns to wish Hillary’s spirit a serene journey to the afterlife.
