Cops from Patrol Borough Brooklyn South will show just how a protected, unified borough can kick back and party next week as they put on their annual Unity Showcase Festival.
For the second year in a row, the Festival will be held at Bartel-Pritchard Square, at the southern tip of Prospect Park, on April 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Each precinct in Patrol Borough Brooklyn South – which protects residents from Coney Island to Canarsie and from Carroll Gardens to Marine Park – is expected to have a table or a booth that will show off what makes their particular part of the borough unique.
“It's a fun filled day,” explained Deputy Inspector Frank Cangiarella, the commanding officer of the 63rd Precinct in Marine Park. “There are plenty of games for the children and events for seniors. It's also very interesting because you get to see a lot of Brooklyn's diversity.”
“[The showcase] is a reflection of the universal Brooklyn,” said Lieutenant James Woods, head of community affairs for Patrol Borough Brooklyn South. “We try to bring all the areas we serve and put them together so people can see them with one glance. You can be in Canarsie for five minutes and then switch gears and be in Park Slope for another five minutes.”
“You will really get to know people from all parts of the borough,” he said.
Coordinators promise plenty of food, games and entertainment.
Area cops, precinct community council members, the NYPD Law Enforcement Explorers and volunteer auxiliaries are all expected to attend the event.
Much like the World Showcase at Epcot Center, each precinct will have a spot, organizers said.
Visitors can go from location to location, which will be packed with photos, artwork, literature about both the precinct and the community they represent. Each table will be manned by representatives from each precinct and community.
As always, police officers will be handing out crime prevention literature to help residents keep their bikes, cars and homes safe from thieves and burglars.
“Collectively we get hundreds and hundreds of people at these events and they all have a great time,” said Chief Joseph Fox, the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South. “It really shows the hard work and the synergistic values our precincts share with each other.”
“We are asking as many members of the community to come out as possible,” Fox said. “Not only will community members be able to bond with the police who protect their own community, but they will be able to interact with the people that make up the heart of their neighboring communities.”
