St. Francis Prep and Molloy continue to wait to settle score

The sun was out and the temperature was up Monday afternoon. After waiting three agonizing days to continue their CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan championship series, St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy were eager to resume.
“Everybody,” Molloy pitcher Janelle Boyd said, “was so ready.”
Except, Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn was not. The rain over the weekend rendered it unplayable, head umpire Mike Kaplan said. The entire third base side was wet, puddles were dotting the infield, and the home dugout was underwater.
“It was more of a safety thing,” St. Francis Prep Coach Ann Marie Rich said.
Molloy, the defending Brooklyn/Queens champions - the Stanners beat the Terriers in a three-game set last year, too - won the first game, 3-1, last Thursday behind the strong pitching of Boyd, who allowed just one earned run on four hits, walked one and struck out six in a complete-game effort.
Each team was shocked when they heard of the news. They practiced over the weekend in preparation to play Monday, and now have to wait even longer. The second game of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Thursday, against at Floyd Bennett Field, but the forecast is ominous. If necessary, a deciding game will also be played on Thursday, weather permitting.
“I want to play now,” Boyd said. “We all want to. But we’ll be ready on Thursday, too.”
Rich is confident the time off will not effect her club, who took the first two meetings during the regular season from the Stanners in comeback fashion, but have dropped the last two.
“They haven’t lost that edge,” she said. “I think it could benefit them. The anticipation grows. We want this game.”
