Fresh off compiling the most wins in school history, five St. John’s University pitchers were selected in last week’s Major League Baseball Amateur draft. The first to go was southpaw Scott Barnes, who was taken in the eighth round by the San Francisco Giants. He was followed by right-hander Justin Gutsie (Texas Rangers, 14th round); hard-throwing junior Jared Yecker (Florida Marlins, 22nd round); left-hander and Big East Pitcher of the Year George Brown (St. Louis Cardinals, 27th round); and closer Colin Lynch (San Diego Padres, 40th round).
The Red Storm hurlers were not the only local prospects to make noise. Former Newtown star and Dominican College ace Tommy Mejia was signed to a free agent contract by the Chicago Cubs.
