At Queensborough Community College’s 47th commencement ceremony, New York State Senator Charles Schumer, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and CUNY Trustee Jeffrey Wiesenfeld spoke of the incredible accomplishments of the class of 2008 graduates. They acknowledged that many Queensborough students have juggled family, work and challenging financial situations and are the first to go to college in their families.
In his commencement address on Friday, May 30, President Eduardo J. Mart’, Ph.D., commented that nearly 50 percent of all students attending college throughout our country have made their start at a community college. Queensborough students come from 135 different countries and many are recent immigrants.
The President’s Award winner, Xiu Yu He of Woodside, won the top academic award of the college with a 4.0 G.P.A. in her college courses taken exclusively at Queensborough.
The Joseph McMurray Award winner, Lori Cameron of Middle Village, won for achieving the second highest scholastic average.
The Thomas R. Jennings Memorial Award winner, Sandra L. Clayton of Brooklyn, won for being the best student in the Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Award winner, Cezanne Wilson of Springfield Gardens, won for her college and community leadership.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Award winner, Farrah Solomon of Bay Shore, won for promoting racial harmony and appreciation of cultural diversity.
