Grants available for local associations

Assemblymember Audrey Pheffer is pleased to announce that Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica, Inc. (NHS) is offering Building Block Grants for local Block and Civic Associations beginning February 1, and eligible Associations can apply for grants to help underwrite their community development projects for 2009.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our Block/Civic Associations to obtain much needed funding for improvement and revitalization projects in our communities,” said Pheffer.
Eligibility requirements for the program include;

  • The Block/Civic Association must be a duly formed organization with elected officers who hold general meetings at least four times per year.
  • The Association must have been in business for a minimum of one year.
  • The Association must provide evidence of its existence for the required regulatory period (evidence such as bank statements, sign-in sheets, minutes or other tangible information/material)
    The funds may be used for things such as stationary, office supplies, block clean-up, block parties, block beautification and/or improvement projects, tree or shrubbery planting or dedication ceremonies.
    In addition, Associations will be required to attend NHS workshops, give recognition to NHS for funding received, submit a completed proposal for funding, provide copies of all necessary documents as evidence for funding, and submit receipts for purchases to NHS no later than November, 1.
    Applications will be available beginning February 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and must be submitted with all necessary attachments by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 2). Those Associations selected to receive the grants will be notified by Monday, March, 16. Applications may be picked up at Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica, Inc. 89-70 162nd Street Jamaica, NY 11432.
