Astoria resident celebrates 100th birthday

One Astoria resident recently celebrated two momentous occasions – the release of his first book and his 100th birthday.

Saul Robbins, a longtime Astoria resident, who released his autobiography Ex Nihilo, which is Latin for “From Nothing,” received a special visit from City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr., to celebrate the milestone.

“Saul’s 100 years truly deserve to be celebrated,” Vallone said. “He’s set an excellent example for our community as a dedicated family man and passionate teacher. We couldn’t have asked for a finer Astoria resident.”

During the celebration, Robbins, who is a retired public school teacher, passed the book around to the dozens of friends and family members who gathered to celebrate his birthday. His family had the book published for him as a birthday present.

Before sharing his knowledge and writing his autobiography, Robbins spent much of his time teaching. He always said he would have “taught for nothing.”

After retiring, Robbins volunteered for many years at HANAC as a Spanish language teacher. He also taught tennis and bridge for seniors.
