What made you decide to run for City Council: A big proponent of education, McLaughlin observed many issues affecting her community’s schools and felt she could bring something new to the table. Among other things, McLaughlin said she would interact with teachers and administrations to give troubled schools a much-needed boost.

What are two issues affecting your community: Mclaughlin is emphatic in her dedication to education, and has recognized the poor state of the schools in her district. Historically underperforming schools result in lower graduation rates, Mclaughlin said, noting that she had made it a priority to see to it that more students graduate from District 27 schools.

Additionally, the local economy is suffering tremendously, McLaughlin said, adding that unemployment is running rampant in her community. In order to contribute to the global economy, the issues in the local spectrum must be corrected first, she said.

What is the first thing you would focus on if elected: Mclaughlin said, “there’s nothing more important than an education.” She has made it a top priority to intervene in dwindling schools in the district by meeting with the administration and teachers alike to develop a common solution to “an issue that has been left alone for too long.”
