Cardiac Health Center programs keep hearts healthy

The Cardiac Health Center of New York Hospital Queens, located in Fresh Meadows, offers heart patients a physician-prescribed cardiac rehabilitation program. As well, the Center has a full roster of wellness classes, which are open to the public and are offered seasonally, and on an ongoing basis. Classes include weight management, and a range of therapeutic services such as Tai Chi, yoga, Reiki and acupuncture to complement traditional medical and surgical treatment.
The cardiac rehabilitation program is for patients who have heart disease and is designed to help stop the
progression of heart disease and/or prevent another heart attack. The program includes three levels of medically supervised exercise, along with instruction for diet and lifestyle modification. Enrollment requires a referral from the patient’s physician, among other criteria.
John Nicholson, M.D., director of the Cardiac Health Center, notes that “For 15 years our team has been
providing support for patients who have or are at risk for heart disease, including those with diabetes, high blood pressure, weight problems and other risk factors.”
The cardiac rehabilitation program has a 98 percent satisfaction rating from the thousands of patients who have participated in it. Additionally, it is the only such program in Queens to be accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
The Center’s newest effort is a Diabetes Education Program – designed for those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes as well as those who have had the disease for many years and need to better manage their condition. The program is built around the individual needs of each participant, and is conducted by a registered nurse and dietitian who are each certified clinical diabetes educators. They are specially trained to teach people how to control and manage diabetes.
This program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and is covered by most health care insurance plans, including Medicare.
The Cardiac Health Center’s Weight Management Program is a physician-supervised, comprehensive approach to help achieve and maintain long-term weight loss.
It is taught by the center’s team of health professionals including physicians, exercise physiologists, registered dietitians and cardiac nurses.
The Cardiac Health Center is located at 174-03 Horace Harding Expressway near Utopia, and is easily accessible by the Long Island Expressway and public transportation. For more information about the Center or any of its programs, please call (718) 670-1695, or go to www.nyhq.org.
