Third Annual Billy Mac Bash Set for October

The Third Annual Billy Mac Bash will be held on October 24 and 26, and will raise money for a scholarship in honor of Country Club staff member Patti McCarthy’s son.
The fundraiser was started shortly after the passing of McCarthy’s son, Billy, who was a student at SUNY Maritime. Through the bash, as well as a golf outing, money is raised for a scholarship in his name that is given to a student at SUNY Maritime.
“I couldn’t be any prouder, I couldn’t feel any more blessed than to have had Billy in our lives, although for too short a time,” a website about the scholarship states. “Life is not measured in length of time, but the quality in which it was lived. Job well done, my boy!”
This year, the bash will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 at Towers on the Green. The cost to attend is $80 per person, which includes a buffet dinner, beer, wine, soda, coffee and dessert. There will also be a DJ, dancing, raffles and a 50/50.
In addition, there will be a golf outing on Monday, October 26, also at North Shore Towers. Check-in and registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. tee off time.
The participation cost is $175 per person and includes a continental breakfast, 18-hole tournament, barbecue following the tournament and prizes.
Both events can be attended for $225 per person. Hole and fairways can be sponsored for $100.
“He made us so proud,” the family writes in a flyer. “Please join us in one or both events so we can celebrate his life and help to make his scholarship fund grow so that it may help others like him.”
Along with proceeds going to the Billy Mac Scholarship Fun, a portion of the money raised will also benefit the St. Francis Prep swim team, of which Billy was a former captain.
In 2007, the first year that the scholarship was started, $38,000 was raised. To receive the scholarship, students must be at least 18 years of age, a student of SUNY Maritime, have a cumulative grade average of 85, and a minimum SAT score of 1100. It is also preferred that the candidate be involved in community service.
The 2008 recipient of the Billy Mac Scholarship was Steven Miller of Middle Village.
Donations are tax deductible, and can be mailed to Patti McCarthy at 78-27 269th Street, New Hyde Park, NY 11040.
