City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village) glided past Republican challenger Tom Ognibene Tuesday night, earning her first full term in office and solidifying her hold over a seat that had been the GOP’s for nearly two decades.

Ognibene, who held the seat from 1991 until term limits forced him out in 2001, had the backing of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Many people said they went to the polls to vote for the mayor, who was running for a third term as an independent.

Turnout appeared to be higher than last month’s primary elections, but the ranks were thin at PS 87 in Middle Village, where six residents were signing in at 10:15 a.m.

“Last time there were more cops than voters,” said one poll watcher, referring to the police officers standing by at the corners of the cafeteria.

Meanwhile, in Forest Hills, Karen Koslowitz claimed victory in the race for Councilwoman Melinda Katz’s (D-Forest Hills) seat.

Koslowitz defeated Lynn Schulman who ran on the Working Families Party line, and Republican Bartholomew Bruno.
