Seniors must check ‘utility workers’ IDs

Police are warning seniors – don’t invite thieves into your home.

Men posing as workers “for the water company” have been tricking seniors to gain access. While one of the team distracts the victim, by taking them to the basement or somewhere away from where most people would keep their valuables, the other loots the house.

“There were four such incidents since December in just one precinct in Queens,” said Police Officer Faith Carter of the 111th Precinct. “There have been incidents in the Bronx also,” she added.

Men posing as Con Ed workers are also targeting seniors with a nearly identical method – distract and steal.

Water meter installers and utility personnel are working in Queens, but they should always be wearing ID badges with their photo. If they aren’t, you may be the target of robbers.
