Looking to replace your old appliances with new, energy-efficient ones?
There’s still time to get a rebate through the “Great Appliance Swap Out.”
“Anyone considering buying new appliances should take advantage of this program as soon as possible,” said Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi. “People will not only be able to save this money buying more efficient appliances but will also save over the long-term with reduced electricity bills.”
The extension is made possible by the New York State Research and Development Authority. The program, established by the New York State Assembly, enables consumers to get rebates for the purchase of refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, and clothing washers that meet Energy Star efficiency standards.
Consumers can save up to $75 on the purchase of a single appliance or up to $500 when purchasing a three-appliance set. Those who can also show proof that their old appliance has been properly recycled can receive an additional larger rebate.
According to the Energy Star web site, consumers can obtain higher rebate amounts by purchasing a package that includes a refrigerator, clothes washer, and dishwasher that are more efficient than Energy Star.
Applicants must submit rebate applications via www.nyapplicanceswapout.com or by calling the program hotline at 1-877-NY-SMART (69-76278). Completed applications must then be mailed with all purchase and recycling receipts (if applicable) and postmarked by April 30. Applications will be viewed on a first-come-first-served basis until the program’s funds are spent. Because the funds are limited, consumers are advised to monitor the amount of funds available.
Hevesi, Chair of the Assembly Renewable Energy Subcommittee and a member of the Assembly Energy Committee, has been a long-time advocate of the Energy Star program.
“In every way we can, policymakers should use Energy Star as a tool to reduce our electricity usage both to reduce carbon emissions and to save money for consumers,” said Hevesi.
