After a livery cab crashed through the fence of a Bayside home Friday, neighborhood residents said the accident highlights the need for a four-way stop sign or speed bumps in an area where they said there has been far too many crashes.
A woman driving on Corporal Stone Street hit a livery cab traveling on 39th Avenue after she did not see the stop sign at the intersection a little before 3 p.m., police from the 111th Precinct said. The cab then careened through the fence of a house at the intersection of 39th Avenue and Corporal Stone, police said.
The cab driver went to the hospital after complaining of shoulder pain, and the woman was not injured, police said.
“There’s been plenty of accidents here — a 4-way stop sign would be good,” said Russell York, who was in his home with his 1-year-old son when he heard the car slam into his fence.
York, who said there is an accident around that area once every couple of months, said he is especially concerned about the intersection because he has three young children.
“They cross this every day,” York said. “The mailman has even told me he’s scared to cross here.”
Anne Stephens, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 30 years, echoed York’s concerns.
“There are many, many accidents at this intersection,” she said. “Everyone takes 39th Avenue as a shortcut and they fly up the street way faster than they should be going.”
Stephens said she would like to see a four-way stop sign or additional speed bumps on 39th Avenue. Currently, there is a speed bump around 39th Avenue and 221st Street.
A policeman said the precinct is also advocating for a white line to be drawn by the stop sign that the woman did not see.
