Hospitals win ‘Best Hospitals’ specialty rankings

US News and World Report has named The Zucker Hillside Hospital and North Shore University Hospital, both of which are part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, to its recently released “America’s Best Hospitals” list.

According to US News and World Report, “Out of 4,852 facilities analyzed for the 2010-11 Best Hospitals rankings, only 152 were ranked in any of the 16 specialties.” The specialties were cancer; diabetics and endocrinology; ears, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; heart and heart surgery; kidney disorders; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; psychology; pulmonology; rehabilitation; rheumatology; and urology.

Located in Glen Oaks, The Zucker Hillside Hospital was recognized in the area of psychiatry and was ranked 19th. It opened 80 years ago and now has 223 beds.

Zucker Hillside has been ranked by US News and World Report three times in the last four years.

“Zucker Hillside’s recognition by US News and World Report is an indicator of our strong efforts towards continually working to serve our patient’s needs,” said Dr. John Kane, the health system’s vice president of behavioral health and chairman of psychiatry. “It is a testament to the quality of our services and the positive impact that we’ve had on the lives of our patients. It also reflects the impact that our academic efforts have had on the field as a whole.”

North Shore University Hospital, located in Manhasset, was ranked 45 for geriatrics. This was the first time US News and World Report had ranked it in this area.

“North Shore University Hospital’s exceptional ranking is a reflection of the quality of care provided by our multidisciplinary approach to geriatric services,” said Dr. Howard Guzik, the hospital’s chief of geriatrics. “It is truly a reflection of the teamwork and dedication that characterizes our entire staff of clinicians and other support staff.”
