This past year pay phones from Verizon and other companies have been removed from hotels in New Mexico, Queens College’s LeFrak Hall, and many other locations. Outside the Geico office near Queens College both phones are out of order, as are many other street phones which are owned or operated by smaller companies.
In the subway the pay phones – if present – are out of order.
Why? Some answers I have been given is that they did not bring in enough money and everyone uses cell phones. Unfortunately, my travel partner and I, on our September trip to northern New Mexico, did not have cell phones.
