Mets visit Cohen’s Children’s hospital

The New York Mets brought some smiles to the faces of children at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York as they paid them a special visit before Christmas.
First Baseman Ike Davis, outfielder Jason Bay and Mets manager Terry Collin joined fan favorite Mr. Met at the hospital on Wednesday, December 15.
Brendan Sullivan, 12, who recently had brain surgery, was one of the children in the hospital who was thrilled to see the Mets players.
“He loves baseball so much he got out of bed just to see the Mets players, and his surgery was yesterday, he is an amazing kid,” said Patricia Sullivan, Brendan’s grandmother.
According to his grandmother, Brendan is also a first baseman, the same as Ike Davis. He also plays the violin, and is doing very well in school.
The players interacted with the children by taking pictures with them and signing autographs.
“As a baseball player this is the stuff outside the field I enjoy doing,” said Davis. “It is nothing better than to meet the kids and put a smile on their face.”
Jen Lacalandra and her four-year-old daughter Ava happily took pictures with Jason Bay at the conclusion of the event.
“She was overwhelmed by the thought of all the baseball players because she did not know they were coming,” said Jen.
For Bay, giving back is very important.
“It means a lot; I have a four-year-old and a two-year-old,” said Bay. “It benefits both the kids and me as well; it makes my day to see that I am the reason for the smiles on the kid’s faces.”
Collins was very happy to be at the event as he was discussing his past experiences with other children at different hospitals.
“This should be done every day,” said Collins. “I’ve done this many times and it makes me feel better every time. This is a humbling experience just to do something positive for the children who are in the hospital.”
