Women’s Basketball

The East Coast Conference released its weekly awards on January 3 and this time around Queens College’s freshman center Caitlin Hopkins took home rookie of the week honors. Hopkins, who hails from Sachem East High School in Holtsville, New York, led the team in rebounds with eight and shot 57 percent from the floor in a December 30 game against St. Thomas Aquinas.

Men’s Basketball

In a game where points were at a premium, the York College men’s basketball team came up a little short, falling to Manhattanville College, 53-50, in a non-conference contest on December 30. The game was sloppily played on both sides, with both teams struggling in the turnover department and at the free throw line. York committed 26 turnovers and shot just 38 percent from the free throw line, while Manhattanvile gave the ball away 17 times and shot 50 percent from the charity stripe. Free throws particularly haunted York down the stretch as they went just 2-11 from the line in the second half.

The Queens College Knights Men’s Basketball team traveled to Orangeburg, New York to take on Caldwell College in the Dominican College Holiday Tournament on January 2. The Knights used a stellar first half in route to a 78-70 victory over the Cougars. The win improves the Knights overall record to 7-1 while the Cougars fall to 3-7. Senior Akim Neverson led all scorers with a 20-point night while going 8-17 from the field. Anderson Labase also dropped 15 points and dished out six assists, while Lamonte Lans added 14 points of his own on a 5-14 effort while also tallying four steals in the contest.

Boys’ Basketball

The Benjamin N. Cardozo Judges are 5-0 on the season and in their last game they beat the previously undefeated Bayside Commodores (5-1) by a score of 66-63. Senior Shelton Mickell leads the Judges in scoring this season, averaging 14.40 points a game. Senior forward Marquis Barnett leads the team in rebounds, averaging 11.40 rebounds a game, while senior guard Christopher Gayot leads the squad in assists with 7.20 a game. The next two games on the schedule for the Judges will be against the Flushing Red Devils (1-4) and then a rematch with the Commodores on January 6.

With the loss to to the Judges, the Commodores fell to second place in the Queens ‘AA’ division. Senior William Dobie leads the team in scoring with 20.33 points a game and junior forward Uzonna Akazi leads the team in rebounds with 7.17 a game. Sophomore guard Austin Williams leads the team in assists with 3.33 assists a game. Next on the schedule for the Commodores is a game the Forest Hills Rangers (3-1), which will be followed by a rematch with the Judges.

The Far Rockaway Sea Horses (4-2) are in a four way tie for first place in the Queens ‘A’ East division with the High School for Construction Red Hawks, the John Adams Spartans, and the Springfield Gardens Golden Eagles. Junior shooting guard Warren Saylor Jr. leads the Sea Horses in scoring with 21.20 a game and 6’4” junior center Christopher Green lead the team with nine rebounds a game. In addition to leading the team in scoring, Saylor leads the team in assists with 3.20 a game. Next up on the schedule for the Sea Horses will be the Spartans.

The Spartans are having a complete turnaround from last season, which saw them win only seven games. Senior Joshua Nazario leads the team with 15.50 points a game and 5.33 assists a game. Senior Jaytaun McMillan is second on the team with 13.40 points a game. Senior Stewart Rentus, who is third on the team with 12.17 points a game, leads the Spartans with 9.17 assists a game.

The Red Hawks are led by John Galimi, who averages 19.60 a game. Six foot three junior Ehiavekhan Eromoselle, who is second on the team in scoring with 15 points a game, leads the team in rebounds with 11.80 a game. In addition to leading the team in scoring, Galimi leads the team with 4.80 assists a game. Next up for the Red Hawks will be the Golden Eagles.

Senior Chukwuemek Okoloji is the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles with 14.17 points a game. Vincent Jackson Jr. is second on the Golden Eagles with 12.60 points a game. Senior Terrence George leads the team in rebounds with 5.33 a game. Okoloji also leads the team in assists with 3.50 a game.
