Queens Council on the Arts is now accepting submissions for the first annual Queens in Love with Literature Translation Award for a full-length book of poetry or a novella. The winner will receive $500 in support of the completion of the translated work and Queens Council on the Arts will help the winner find a press interested in publishing the translation. The QUILL Translation Award is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts.
Translations may be from any language into English and the work submitted must be a current work in progress, to be completed within one year of receipt of the award.
Preference will be given to works that have not been previously translated. Previously translated works will be considered, but applicants should include an explanation for why they are proposing a new translation.
The deadline is April 18, 2011. For full guidelines and to apply online, visit qca.cuerate.org or queenscouncilarts.org. The awardee will be chosen May 5, with a ceremony and reading by the winning translator to follow on June 18.
Eligible applicants must live in the borough of Queens and be 18 years of age or older, and current students are ineligible.
QUILL features the work of authors writing in languages other than English and the art of translation in Queens, offering audiences the opportunity not only to hear from authors working in their own neighborhood, but also perhaps in their own language. Through a salon-type setting that encourages dialogue between audience and reader, QUILL events bring the writers’ community together through networking opportunities where editors, authors, translators and publishers working in the field can gather to share resources and build community.
The 2010-2011 QUILL series will culminate with the ceremony for the QUILL Translation Award June 18.
