District 25 All Stars shine at Cardozo

In a celebration of sportsmanship, District 25 elementary basketball and cheerleading concluded their season with an inter-squad all-star game that ended with the score 42-38 in favor of the Blue team. Both teams (Red and Blue) had one member from each of the 11 District 25 teams turning teammates into rivals for the celebratory afternoon at Cardozo High School in Bayside.

“This gym is like Madison Square Garden to these kids,” said James Phair, principal of P.S. 107 and commissioner of District 25 basketball. “[Basketball] doesn’t show up on a progress report but it is so important in terms of development. This all-star game is the culmination of another great season.”

Before the game, Kevin Ramirez of the P.S. 163 Dolphins won the annual lay-up contest and Nicko Hermoso of the P.S. 209 Jammers won a thrilling foul shooting contest in an overtime shoot-off during halftime. Each timeout during the game was met by dance routines and cheers performed by each squads’ cheerleaders, who provided the pep.
