Flames Erupt at Met Food

May 9, 2011 By Christian Murray

A small fire broke out at 8 p.m. Friday night at Met Food in Sunnyside.

Local residents called 911 when they saw smoke and flames coming from the 44-07 43rd Ave. store. The flames occurred inside the former location of Ceci Beauty Club, where Met Food is in the midst of retrofitting for its expansion.

While there were no injuries or fatalities, about 11 firetrucks arrived on the scene. The firefighters had to smash through the entrance of the former beauty salon to put out the flames.

The owner of Met Food said the cause of the fire is unknown and the expansion plans are continuing. He said there was no significant damage. The FDNY did not immediately respond to questions.
