next one are extraordinary. On August 13, Lo Cicero will turn 101 years old.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Lo Cicero married her husband Joseph around age 30. Together, they worked diligently, she in the garment industry and he for the government, until they saved enough money to buy their first house in Springfield Gardens.
Two years later, Lo Cicero’s husband died and she was forced to sell the house. Thereafter, Lo Cicero decided to move her family to an apartment in Ozone Park.
“[My mother] was very independent,” recalled Honey Winter, 74, Lo Cicero’s elder daughter. “She knew what she wanted and did what she wanted in her own way of thinking.”
After her two daughters wed, Lo Cicero moved to the Scheuer House in Bayside where she currently resides.
Lo Cicero said that Queens changed a lot over the years but she still preferred to “stay put”.
“Everyone is friendly to her,” said Winter. “She likes the [Scheuer] House . . . She’s got a lot of people who are very nice to her.”
This year, Lo Cicero’s friend and fellow resident will bake a cake for the small birthday celebration with family and friends. All are looking forward to the day with much anticipation.
Lo Cicero also said that, along with her birthday, she looks forward to “everyday life”.
“We are blessed everyday,” said Winter, excited about her mother’s birthday and extremely grateful for the day.
“It’s just so wonderful to have a mom that’s been so close to me,” exclaimed Lo Cicero’s younger daughter, Sugar Schorndorf, 71. “[She’s] been good to me all my life . . . I’m very thankful that I still have her.”
