For Deputy Inspector Milt Marmara it’s like coming home.
On May 9, he became Commanding Officer of the 113th Precinct, which encompasses the neighborhoods of St. Albans, Hollis, Springfield Gardens, South Ozone Park, South Jamaica, Addisleigh Park and Locust Manor.
During his career, Marmara, who grew up in Astoria, worked under his predecessor, Inspector Kristel Johnson, who is now an Executive Officer in the Housing Bureau Bronx/Queens.
“The people in the community remember me,” said Marmara. “They greeted me with a warm welcome. It’s like coming back into a family.”
Most recently, Marmara spent three years in the 69th Precinct in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and also served as Executive Officer in the 101st Precinct and in the 102nd Precinct.
Now, he said, there’s “a lot of work to do” in the 113th, especially regarding crime and quality of life.
“Economically, these neighborhoods have been hit pretty hard,” he said. “However, the community is one of the best around.”
And it’s the community with which Marmara intends to work to affect change.
“It can’t be done without the community – the politicians, block associations, civics – we have to empower them,” he said. “Working together with them we can do a lot.”
Marmara, who is married to a former police detective and has a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, feels that tackling smaller issues will lead to a positive change in bigger problems.
And, he noted, if you have issues that need to be addressed, the 113th Precinct Community Council meets the third Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the precinct, 167-02 Baisley Boulevard, Jamaica (meetings resume in September), or you can call Community Affairs at 718-712-6344/1627.
