Josephine Carreno, a Flushing resident, died July 14. She was 98.
Carreno was born in July 16, 1912, and had been a Flushing resident since 1939. She attended and graduated from the Juilliard School of Fine Arts in Manhattan, where she studied art and music. She used to work for Channel 7 as an executive secretary to the vice president.
She was a world traveler who spoke five languages fluently. At age 50, she went back to college to pursue her master’s in foreign language.
After she graduated, Carreno worked as a Spanish teacher at Holy Cross High School, at 26-20 Francis Lewis Blvd. in Flushing, while working on her doctorate. She then went on to work as a professor of Spanish at Queens College, at 65-30 Kissena Blvd. in Flushing, as well as Queensborough Community College, at 222-05 56th Ave. in Bayside.
She was the author of three educational Spanish books for use in schools, which are still in use today.
Carreno was married to artist Albert E. Carreno before he died in 1964. She is survived by her son Robert, daughter-in-law Doris, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
