L. I. C. Welcomes Plenty of Newly- Planted Trees

Legislator: Beautifies A Busy Roadway

City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and Deputy Parks Commissioner Larry Scott Blackmon joined local residents and community leaders to unveil newly planted trees along 11th Street in Long Island City last Tuesday, May 8.

City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Long Island City residents in celebrating the planting of new trees along the median of 11th Street in Long Island City at a May 8 press conference.

As noted, Van Bramer was able to work with the Parks Department to get nine Hawthorn trees planted in the median along 11th Street after local residents voiced their concerns about the need to replace dead trees along the corridor in Long Island City.

“Today, we have made 11th Street more inviting and much more of a pleasant place to live,” Van Bramer said last Tuesday. “This street is more than just a street for cars to get and from where they are going. 11th Street is home to many residents of Long Island City-residents who care about the beauty of their neighborhood. I want to thank the Parks Department for coming together with our office to bring us these wonderful green additions to our residents.”

The newly planted trees are just another part of the ongoing transformation of Long Island City, the legislator noted, including new schools being built, parks being renovated and the new library which will break ground early next year.

“I would like to thank Council Member Van Bramer for partnering with the Parks Department to plant these nine new trees,” said Blackmon. “Trees bring so many benefits -from cleaning the air and providing oxygen, to beautifying our streets and regulating air temperature. Under Mayor Bloomberg, we’re planting one million new trees in our parks and on our streets, and I’m certain that these Hawthorn trees will be a welcome addition to Long Island City.”
