Thalia Theater Company, the only Hispanic theatre establishment in Queens, kicked off its 18th summer series on Sunday by hosting a Mexican showcase at Thomson Hill Park/Noonan Playground on 43rd Street and Greenpoint Avenue.
The Sunnyside-based theatre company played host to “Ballet Fiesta Mexicana”, a variety of regional folk dances interpreted through the use of colorful dresses and graceful moves to the tunes of Con Mariachi Flor de Toloache, an all-girl Mexican Mariachi band.
The theater company presents two performances in the park each year, which take place during the first two Sundays of every June, between 1pm to 2pm.
“We do this for the community—to let people know about the music, the culture and dance of the Hispanic people,” said Kathryn Giaimo, Thalia’s administrative director. “Hopefully, people will then come to the theater to see a show.”
Next Sunday, Thalia will present Mestizo Dance company, a Colombian music and dance.
Thalia, which is located at 41-17 Greenpoint Ave., has served the community for 35 years.
