An event featuring vintage cartoons, live music and pizza will be held at Sunnyside Gardens Park later this month.
The event — to be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 6:30 p.m. — has been organized by two Sunnyside women who formed “Flicks in the Garden” last year, which was established to showcase local films and artwork. The main draw this year will be the showing of kid-friendly vintage animation films provided by Queens native Jose Stathes. The event is open to the public.
Stathes, who runs the website CartoonsOnFilm.com, celebrates and collects early animation films. The films that will be shown at the Sunnyside Gardens Park event include rarely-seen cartoons from the 1930s and 1940s, such as Along Came a Duck (1934), House Cleaning Blues (1937) and Date to Skate (1938).
“We have been working closely with our curator to make sure the films have appropriate content and themes for kids, including very young children,” said Flicks in the Garden co-producer Tammy Arnstein. “Plus we want to make sure the films are fun and expose them to film styles and characters no longer commonly seen by today’s young audiences.”
Flicks in the Garden was established by Sunnyside filmmakers Emilie McDonald and Tammy Arnstein.
Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer’s office, Sunnyside Shines and local businesses are helping to fund the public event. There is a $10 per person suggested donation, or $5 for park members.
In other news, the members of Sunnyside Gardens Park will be hosting a multi-family yard sale on Sept. 23, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Approximately 40 vendors are expected to attend with an eclectic range of goods– from kids clothing, toys, electronics and furniture.
