Local Pastor Tapped As ‘sunnysider’ of the Year

Chamber Honors Him At Oct. 29 Gala

Fr. Brian Dowd, pastor of Queen of Angels Catholic church in Sunnyside, will be honored as the second annual Luke Adams Sunnysider of the Year at a gala to be held on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at Dazies Restaurant, Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce President Swain Weiner announced.

Fr. Brian Dowd (third from right) of Queens of Angels Catholic Church in Sunnyside will be honored as Sunnysider of the Year by the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 29.

The award, chosen by the Chamber board, is unique in local awards because only one is given each year, and the criteria for nomination is exceptional community service, without regard to politics, fundraising, or faith.

The event costs $50 per ticket, and includes pasta, a choice of salmon, chicken or beef entrée, dessert, a glass of wine, and live entertainment.

According to Weiner, Father Dowd was selected for his work with the diverse church, which includes many Latino, Bengali and Filipino parishioners. Dowd spearheads ecumenical events with other Christian leaders, and has reached out to Muslims and Jews.

The church also hosts Sunnysideartists.org’s annual non-denominational Queen of Angels Art Fair, which attracts over 1,000 residents, and donated to extend the popular Skillman Avenue holiday lights.

The event is to recognize Father Dowd but also as a benefit for the Chamber itself.
