For working to catch a suspected heroin dealer near Forest Park in Woodhaven, Police Officers Christopher Veland and Kenneth Vencak (third and second from right, respectively) were honored as Cops of the Month during the 102nd Precinct Community Council meeting last Tuesday night, Jan. 15, at the Richmond Hill library. Reportedly, Veland and Vencak were on routine patrol on Jan. 9 in the vicinity of 80th Avenue and 85th Street when they observed an apparent dispute among two individuals. When the officers approached the duo, police stated, one of the individuals dropped something that appeared to be narcotics. Upon further investigation, Vencak and Valand recovered the dropped item-100 small bags of heroin-as well as 796 additional envelopes of the drug from the suspect’s vehicle. Capt. Henry Sautner (center), the precinct’s commanding officer, stated that the arrested individual has a prior arrest record including a murder charge for which he served 17 years in prison. Sautner and Latchman Budhai (fourth from left), precinct council president, gave the officers plaques donated by the Times Newsweekly. They are pictured with (from left to right) the precinct council’s Ranjit Singh, vice president; J. Richard Smith, secretary and Sandra Datnarian, treasurer; and P.O. Jose Severino of the 102nd Precinct Community Affairs Unit.
