Quebradillas Celebrates Opening Day at Hope Park

The Quebradillas Little League Baseball organization marked the start of baseball season in Bushwick with an Opening Day Parade through the neighborhood and a celebration at Hope Park Baseball Field on Saturday, May 18. Neighbors and fans of all stripes came out in droves to witness the event and celebrate the true start of summer at Hope Park, which is located at the corner of Knickerbocker and Grove streets. The parade was dedicated to the memory of the 26 children who were lost in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. in December of last year. The event also honored Grand Marshal Carmen Gonzalez and Firefighter Benny Ortiz of Engine Co. 227 for his 30th year of serving the community. Among those pictured in the top photo are: Quebradillas Commissioner Carlos Feliciano (center-left, displaying a plaque); Ortiz (center, wearing a cap, sash and displaying a plaque); and Gonzalez (center, wearing a sash). Other photos show various Quebradillas teams. Quebradillas is Bushwick’s oldest youth baseball league. For over a decade, the non-profit organization has taught kids teamwork and the fundamentals of the game. The organization is also a partner of the Community Improvement Athletic League and Real Guadalupe Soccer Organization (pictured at the bottom of the opposite page).
