A new group is forming in Sunnyside dedicated to the LGBT community.

Brendan Becker, who has lived in Sunnyside for the past two years, has just established “Sunnyside Out,” a group that will focus on organizing local LGBT get-togethers as well as performing community service.

“There is a significant LGBT population in Sunnyside and western Queens,” Becker said. Currently, he said, the local LGBT community usually has to go to Jackson Heights or Manhattan to meet up.

Becker said his aim is to put together a group where the members can gather at a local gay-friendly bar/restaurant or arrange potluck dinners at people’s houses. He said the organization is not exclusively for the LGBT community.

The group will be holding its first gathering this Friday, May 31, at the Wild Turkey Pub at 39-35 47th Avenue. The event starts at 7:00 p.m.

Becker is trying to get the word out about the group through social media and word of mouth. He recently created a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SunnysideOutNY) as part of his outreach.

He said his aim is to draw members from Sunnyside, Woodside, Astoria and Long Island City. He said the benefit of Sunnyside is that it is located in the middle of all four neighborhoods.
