Sunnyside’s leading dog group is hosting its first event at the newly-revamped Lou Lodati Park Saturday where it aims to find homes for as many as 15 to 20 rescue dogs.
Sunnyside United Dog Society (SUDS), a grass-roots group that was instrumental in bringing a dog run to Lou Lodati Park, will be closing down that run from 12pm-4 pm, Oct. 5, for an adoption event.
The group will be bringing in rescue dogs from an organization called Four Paws Sake. The dogs will run the gamut in terms of age and breed.
Meanwhile a cat group will also be coming in with about 15 cats, all looking for homes.
The canines and felines, however, will be kept separate. The canines will be kept in the dog run traditionally for the big dogs, while the cats will be placed in the run for small dogs.
“This event is what SUDS is all about,” said Jeannette Remak, a local resident who is organizing the event. “We aim to look after those animals that are the least fortunate.”
As part of the event, Father Brian Dowd from Queen of Angels Church will bless the animals at 12:30 pm at the dog run.
Meanwhile, there will be a trainer who will evaluate dogs to see how well they react to other dogs and people—in what is being called a “canine good citizen test.”
There will also be a raffle where the proceeds will go to Four Paws Sake. Prizes include dog and cat treats—to a ladies Vegan handbag to an autographed hockey puck by Sean Avery.
Those animals that are adopted will be examined and given free shots by Beshoy Rafla, a veterinarian at Queens Animal Hospital in Woodside.
