The first significant step toward easing school overcrowding in Woodside takes place Friday with a ceremonial groundbreaking of a new elementary school.
The new school, which will be located at 39th Avenue and 57th Street, will cater to about 470 students. It will be a 5 story building and is expected to open September 2015.
The addition of the new school—to be called PS 339– will help alleviate school overcrowding at PS 11, which is located at 54-25 Skillman Ave. That school, which is currently functioning over capacity, has about 1,350 students.
PS 11 has as many as 10 beaten-up portables that litter the school grounds—with several more than a decade old. The trailers are used by about 220 kindergarten and first grade students.
“Our children should never be forced to learn in trailers that are falling apart,” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.
In an addition to the new school, the city will be building an annex at PS 11, which will serve 340 students. Construction is expected to be completed in 2016.
