Child struck and killed by truck in Woodside: NYPD

By TimesLedger Staff

A truck driven by an unlicensed driver struck and killed an 8-year-old boy who was walking to school with his sister in Woodside Friday morning, the NYPD said.

Noshat Nahian, a third-grade student at PS 152, was with his 11-year old sister when he was hit by a tractor trailer making a left turn onto Northern Boulevard at 61st Stre3et

The child was the third youngster to be killed by a motor vehicle on Northern Boulevard in the past year.

Breaking News Network sent an e-mail at 9:48 a.m. saying the child was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and pronounced dead. Police said the accident occurred around 8 a.m.

Maricio Osorio-Palominos, 51, of Newark, NJ, stayed at the scene of the accident and was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle in violation of safety rules, according to the NYPD.

“I am devastated to learn of the tragic death,” Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said, “All streets, including Northern Boulevard, must be safe and livable and no child should ever die simply trying to cross the street on his way to school.” He said he is committed to Vision Zero, a Swedish traffic plan whose goal is elimination of all traffic death. The plan is supported by Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio and incoming Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.

Queens Borough President Helen Marshall said, “The loss of a child is the most difficult tragedy a parent can bear, so my heart goes out to Noshat’s family in their time of loss. I would also like to express my condolences to the staff and students at PS 152.”

Friday was the last day of class at the school before Christmas break.

Make Queens Safer-Three Children Too Many, a group of activists that advocate for safer streets that formed after the three area children were killed in traffic accidents on Northern Boulevard, will hold a vigil in Noshat Nahian’s memory as soon as they can contact the child’s family, co-founder Cristina Furlong said.
