The New York Cosmos soccer team was on top the universe as they presented the 2013 North American Soccer League (NASL) championship trophy on Wednesday to local officials.
Following a 30-year hiatus in the NASL, the Cosmos won the championship last month in their first season back in the league, for its sixth NASL title in club history.
“The championship was a testament to the hard work put in this year by our coaching staff and players,” said Erik Stover, the team’s Chief Operating Officer. “We’re honored to have the opportunity to present the trophy to the fans, New York State public officials and those who have supported our efforts from the onset.”
At the presentation State Senator Jack Martins voiced support for the team’s proposed stadium near the Queens border in Elmont. The proposal is still under review.
“This team deserves a stadium and the residents of Elmont deserve a stadium,” Martins said. “It’s an idea whose time has come, it’s an idea that we need today during these tough economic times.”
