Ridgewood Catches Robbery Rash

Knife-Wielding Bandits Targeted Women

Four knifepoint robberies took place on streets in the Ridgewood area between Sunday and Monday, Feb. 23-24, police announced.

In an email sent to the Times Newsweekly, Det. Thomas Bell of the 104th Precinct Community Affairs Unit reported the incidents occurred between 3 p.m. and midnight on both days.

One of the holdups occurred on Sunday in the vicinity of Decatur Street and Myrtle Avenue, authorities stated. Two of the Monday robberies reportedly took place in the vicinity of Cypress Avenue and Summerfield Street.

Police said the third Monday caper occurred in the area of Grove Street and Forest Avenue.

In each of the incidents, according to law enforcement sources, two male perpetrators described as either white or Hispanic followed their victims and, upon confronting them, displayed knives.

They reportedly removed undetermined property from their victims, most of whom were women.

All of the robberies were reported to the 104th Precinct. Bell advised residents to be alert to their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.

Upon further investigation, police believe the suspects are also responsible for three similar capers in Ridgewood dating back to Jan. 22.

The 104th Precinct has assigned additional officers to patrol the Ridgewood area, it was noted.

Those with information regarding the robberies that could prove helpful are asked to call the 104th Precinct at 1-718-386-3004; all calls will be kept confidential.

Anyone who observes a crime in progress should call 911 immediately.
