A new restaurant is under development at the former site of Uncle George’s Greek Tavern.

The new restaurant, which will be located at 33-19 Broadway and 34th Street, will serve Greek food like its predecessor.

“It will be a similar style to Uncle George’s, just more modern,” said Mike Moustakas, a broker who found the new tenant.

Uncle George’s was a popular Astoria institution known for its gyros, leg of lambs and souvlaki. It closed in June, after being there since 1978.

The business was at its height when George ‘Uncle George’ Polimenakos owned it. However, he died and his widow, Maria, sold it in 2009.

Moustakas said the owner has yet to come up with a name for the establishment and details such as its layout will become available in the coming weeks.
