Community activists and historians gathered at All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village last Saturday morning, June 14, to mark the 110th anniversary of the city’s deadliest maritime disaster. The gathering took place at the cemetery’s Slocum memorial, which pays tribute to the more than 1,100 passengers who died when the pleasure boat Slocum caught fire while cruising the East River in 1904. Most of the victims were of German descent. Among those pictured are (from left to right) Dan Austin Sr., president of All Faiths Cemetery; Daniel Austin Jr. of All Faiths; Lt. Matthew Arnold of the U.S. Coast Guard; State Sen. Joseph Addabbo; Republican District Leader Tony Nunziato; and Consul-General Bernard Georg Reindl with his wife.
