Big Apple Games Offer Fun for B’wick Youths

Ongoing Athletic Pgm. At Local Public School

Young people in Bushwick can take advantage of the Big Apple Games competition and recreational program at I.S. 291, located at 231 Palmetto St. in Bushwick, until July 31.

The free program has operated since 1982 and welcomes kids in grades four through nine from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, Monday through Thursday. Breakfast and lunch are served free as well, teacher Jennifer Jones said.

At the school they will get instruction in various activities, including arts and crafts, basketball, volleyball and bowling. A game room with board games, three foosball tables, two billiards tables and three bumper pool tables will also provide respite from the summer heat outside, as the school is air conditioned, Jones said.

But to Jones the importance of the program extends beyond their comfort.

“It’s very important because it keeps the kids off the street and they get instruction,” she said. “It’s a great program. Its like this is a free day camp for kids.”
