In an effort to combat rising auto theft, the 114 precinct is hosting a free VIN etching event on September 14th.

VIN etching– which often involves engraving a car’s windows and windscreen with the Vehicle Identification Number– helps deter theft and makes it easier for police to track down a stolen vehicle or stolen parts.

The 114th precinct will be hosting the event along with Assembly member Aravella Simotas at the Immaculate Conception parking lot, located at 21-47 29th Street, from 3 to 6 pm.

According to the latest crime statistics, Grand Larceny Auto (G.L.A.) continues to be on the rise—up 15% from a year ago.

There have been 135 reported GLAs for the year through August 19, compared to 117 incidents for the same period a year ago.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to pre-register by calling Simotas office before September 4th. The number is  718-545-3889
